Week 1 Update!

It has been an exciting first week back at WGHS! Students spent this week getting to know their teachers, classroom routines, and expectations, as well as just getting readjusted to being back at the high school full time! The energy in the halls was amazing! Freshmen did a great job figuring out their schedules, navigating the building, and getting to know our school community better. Thank you to all of the upperclassmen who assisted and made this week just a little bit easier for our newest students.

Safety

Overall, students did a great job following COVID-19 guidelines for the building. Please remind your students that wearing a properly fitted mask, over your nose and mouth, is a requirement for all students and staff inside WGHS regardless of vaccination status. Teachers do provide mask breaks during each period, and many classes are getting outside while the weather is nice to get some additional time without masks.

Students, we ask that you continue to be patient in the hallways and do your best to keep some distance between yourself and the other students traveling the halls. Major intersections can become congested, so wait for the area to thin out, or consider an alternate route to class.

Cafeterias

As we have worked to make lunches both a safe and enjoyable experience for students this year, we have decided to make some changes.

Starting Monday students will begin using “QR codes” to log where they sit in the cafeterias daily. This simple procedure will allow students to quickly record where they are sitting should contact tracing ever be needed.

Students may use their personal cell phone, a friend's device, or a staff member provided device to scan a “QR code” on the table where they are sitting. This code will link the student to a google document that will ask their name, their lunch period, and what table they are sitting at. This information will then be logged on a daily basis should contact tracing ever be necessary. Administrators will be in each cafeteria to help explain the process to the students, assist the staff, and clear up any questions people may have. (Thank you B’ville, C-NS, Central Square, and FM for the great idea!)

In addition, our upperclassmen in cafeterias 2 and 3 will be given the option to eat outside during the nice weather in order to spread out a bit. We tested it out today and it went great! Students can eat a picnic style lunch on the sidewalk or grass, or choose to spend a little time outside with friends after they have had lunch inside. Thank you to our lunch supervisors for help making this happen! Let’s just remember to pick up after ourselves and we’ll continue for as long as the weather holds out!

Positivity Project

tshirts
Today our staff wore our new Positivity Project t-shirts with this year's theme, Building CommUNITY, to kick-off the new school year! The West Genesee High School Positivity Project is focusing on the character strength “teamwork” for the month of September. Each month we will be focusing on a different strength while also building community within the high school. If students would like to join the WGHSP2 club please see Mrs. Deemer in B237.

Picture Days!

Class/staff pictures for the yearbook and student  IDs will be taken in the front section of the upper gym. Students will be escorted to the gym during their English class.
