March 19- Information Regarding School Under Our New Circumstances

March 19, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we enter this new phase of unprecedented instructional change, our teachers and staff have been working to develop remote learning opportunities for our students for the coming days and potentially weeks. Counselors, social workers, and teachers will be engaging with students through Google Classroom, email, and/or virtual office hours. Click here to enter the Secondary WG Online Learning Portal.  Contact information for our teachers and professional staff is provided here organized by department. Any questions or concerns relating to online instruction should be directed to the teacher of the course.

While we know that many of our teachers are already checking in with students, starting on Monday, March 23, students will receive lessons/activities in their Google Classroom accounts. We know that families are dealing with numerous challenges, so students should expect only one to two 40 minute lessons/activities each week per class at this time. Teachers will be providing instructional feedback to all students on each assignment. Our primary goal is to maintain our connections with students and to continue developing their secondary academic skills and proficiency. Participation is expected, as teachers will be monitoring student involvement via comments, emails, and Google Classroom activity. Participation is the key to success!

At this time, college level courses will continue to hold the expectation of the affiliated college or university. All of our college level courses will continue according to their initial syllabi. Any updates or changes to that expectation will be shared through the course’s Google Classroom site. Currently, all Advanced Placement courses and their exams are still scheduled for completion in early May.

We ask that you continue to look for updates in the following ways:

In addition, we would like to recognize all of the WGCSD staff who have been working tirelessly to organize and deliver meals and technology. Also, our incredible custodial staff who continue to work to keep all of our staff and volunteers safe. Thank you to Gloria Francisco and the PTSA for arranging for volunteers and creating our first virtual spirit week!

Our current plan of distance learning is based on a return to school on April 14, 2020. Due to the unforeseen nature of this virus and the caution that we will exercise to protect the West Genesee family, our plans may change. These changes will be guided by both New York State and Onondaga County. Any updates, should we need to make them, will be communicated on our District website, through the blog, and through email. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Wayne Ackles

Late February Early March Edition

Somehow March has snuck up on us, and it appears as though we are headed toward spring! I continue to be proud of the progress of our students not just in their studies, but also their connections to the school and broader community.

Culture Fair

What an incredible day on February 29. There was music, food, dance, and well, culture! It was also a great turn out by the community. Thank you to the variety of student groups that participated and interacted with our younger participants. The Culture Fair is one of the things that makes West Genesee the special place that it is!

Students Giving Back

Along with the Culture Fair, we had two events this week where students gave back that were also noteworthy. One was a student panel held at Camillus Middle School on Thursday, March 5, where students shared some tips on what it takes to be successful at West Genesee High School next year.

The second was when the Sophomore Senate helped at the Ronald MacDonald House making breakfast on Saturday March 7, Again representing the diverse ways that our West Genesee Students give back to the community.
